LANDSCAPING PROJECTS

Have you ever heard of rainscaping? Rainscaping is a landscaping approach that manages rainwater where it falls instead of letting it run off into streets, storm drains, or basements. In simple terms, it's designing your yard so rainwater soaks in and helps your plants, instead of running off and causing problems. It’s about slowing down, soaking in, and using rainwater in a healthy, natural way in order to maintain your landscape, as well as protect the aquifer and bodies of water.

These terraces and runoff/downspout rivers below capture thousand of gallons of rain water and mitigate erosion that would have otherwise cause further destruction to ecosystems and infrastructure.

REGENERATIVE, PERMACULTURE BASED TECHNIQUES:

  • Water walks and rivers: river-like channels that slow, spread, and soak rainwater on a slope to mitigate runoff and erosion

  • Terraces: stepped levels that reduce erosion and runoff, and manage slopes

  • Rain gardens: planted areas that collect and absorb downspout water and runoff

  • Swales and berms: Depressions and raised mounds that redirect and hold water

  • Contouring: shaping the land to follow natural water flow

  • Permeable, water-wise hardscapes: surfaces and structures that let water soak through or mitigate further erosion

  • Soil remediation: layering organic material to build healthy soil

  • Living groundcover: plants that protect soil and retain moisture

IN-PROCESS PROJECTS THAT WILL BE PLANTED IN THE SPRING
Many of these projects include terraces and runoff rivers to mitigate the erosion and runoff problems happening prior. The terraces increase the surface area and change the grade of the capturing and directing water to the plants that will be planted on top of the terraces. Water is also slowed and filtered, helping protect the aquifers.
